THE DILETTANTES

101 Tambourines

(Stranger Touch)

While the Haight offers itself up as a hippie theme park for the Summer of Love's 40th anniversary, it's nice to see a band from the 'hood paying tribute to our city's sunshine days with a more genuine form of affection. Led by ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre tambourine player Joel Gion, the Dilettantes shake out psychedelic garage pop in the spirit of Moby Grape, but 101 Tambourines brings much-welcome street-corner grit to the proceedings. Gion's Lou Reed–like nonchalance on "Like Crazy" and a glockenspiel-sparkled "The Whole World" exude a cool detachment not usually associated with the '60s, while the Brock Galland–sung "You're Gonna Need More Time" injects world-weariness into a Byrds-worthy shuffle. Last, proving that three vocalists are better than two, Jefferson Parker leads the group in a grand processional through these grimy byways with "Don't You Ever Fall."
